How to Prepare for an Engagement Shoot

I get asked all the time by couples about how to prepare for their upcoming engagement shoot. It may seem a little daunting if you've never have had a professional shoot before, but I assure you it can be a lot of fun and  can leave you with some great memories!

Clothing- "What do I wear!?" is the most popular question and I always suggest wearing something that you're comfortable in. Some other important elements to consider: are we shooting outdoor or indoor? Will there be a lot of walking? What will the weather be like? Is there access to a washroom so you can do an outfit change (in case you want both casual and formal photos)? My only request is that I tell my clients to avoid neon clothing as it tends to reflect. If you have a neon green shirt, it's likely you'll have a neon green chin (eep!).

Pets- Some may want to bring their pet along with them to their family shoot because those furry friends are part of the family too! If you plan to do this, make sure that your pet is comfortable in this sort of setting (ex. good with people and other animals). Also, make sure the location is animal friendly. Lastly, make sure you have scheduled enough time because having an animal with you on the shoot may take up extra time. Treats may be a good thing to bring so you can reward them for their good behavior. I suggest bringing water too, just in case.

Accessories- When a couple asks if they can bring accessories, I always say "Yes, of course!" because it's your shoot! I want the shoot to be an expression of you both and as a couple. So if that means adding something special that will give the shoot extra meaning, bringing something silly to show your goofy sides or even bringing your family pet, I'm more than happy to help make the shoot unique to you!

Nerves- As I mentioned above, shoots can be a little daunting if you haven't ever done this sort of thing before, or if you're not particularity comfortable in front of the camera. Here's the good news, most people aren't experienced in front of the camera so there's comfort in that, you're not alone! Try not to overthink it because it's my job to make you feel comfortable. All you have to do is show up and I'll do my best to guide you on what to do while you're there! :)

Just be you- As cheesy as that may sound, it's the truth! My goal is to capture the love between you guys. I want you to be able to look back on these photos and get the warm fuzzies... I want you to have fun with the shoot, talk, laugh and let me capture the connection you both share. Don't worry too much on how you'll pose or what to do with your hands, I'm here to help!
